本事業は科学技術振興調整費「スマトラ型巨大地震・津波被害の軽減策」（代表：東京大学地震研究所・加藤照之）により実施されています。
日本には留学生を始め多くの外国人の方々が住んでいます。しかし子供の頃から地震や地震災害について学ぶ機会の多い日本人と異なり、他の国々からいらっしゃった方々は必ずしも地震や地震災害について詳しいとはかぎりません。地震や津波に対する知識が大事であることは、２００４年１２月に発生したスマトラ沖巨大地震津波でも明らかになりました。そこで、昨年度から東京大学地震研究所では留学生センターと協力して、首都圏に住む外国の方を対象として地震と地震防災について、その仕組みから学ぶ機会を試行的に設けました。昨年度は留学生のみを対象としていましたが、今年度はより多くの方にも来ていただくことができるようにしました。この機会に、多くの方のご参加を期待しています。

Many foreign residents are working and lerning in Japan including international students in Japanese universities. In contrast to Japanese residents, most of the peaple from foreign countries have insufficient knowledge and experience in earthquakes and earthquake disasters. The tragedy of Off-Sumatra greate earthquake in December 2004 teaches us the importance of the knowledge of natural disasters such as earthquakes or tsunamis. It is one of the responsibility for us to provide the opportunity to learn what is earthquakes and its disaters for all the peaple who live in Japan, especially in Tokyo metropolitan area. We strongly recommend to participate in the seminar to reduce the loss from earthquakes.
