(The documentation of function read_latlonDEM_to_3d)
Last Update: 2025/12/22
(Purpose)
Read a digital elevation model,
composed of the elevations at latitude- and longitude-based grid nodes,
into a struct _3d_data-type structure.
The data is read from a single file.
The user specifies the file name.
The name of an input file,
which must be a text file that has the same format as
the output files from
GSIdem2latlonData command.
The \(x\)-component represents the longitude,
given as a real number in the second unit
that includes the degreen and minute parts in the calculation
(\(3600\times\) degree \(+60\times\) minute \(+\) second)
to avoid rounding errors in the conversion of the coordinates
from degree:minute:second to a real number.
The \(y\)-component represents the longitude,
given in the same manner as the \(x\)-component.
The \(z\)-component is dummy zero value that is not used.
Note that the \(z\)-component is not an elevation;
the \(z\)-component of a 3-D data is
an independent variable for a coordinate,
but a function of \((x,y)\) (a dependent variable)
that is the case in a digital elevation model.
The value of 3-D data at each location:
ground surface elevation (m).
If the elevation is undefined, -99999999.99 is inserted.
The coordinates are converted to \(x\) and \(y\) in the 3-D data
(variable topography) as,
for example, from 35°30’36”N
to \(y=35\times 3600+30\times 60+36=127836\)
and from 137°54’7.2”
to \(x=137\times 3600+54\times 60+7.2=496447.2\).
